Manage Content with Box for Android

The Box for Android application allows you to use Box on any Android mobile device. Within Box for Android, you can create, view, edit, and share content — all on-the-go.

How Do I Add Files and Folders to Box From My Android device?

  1. Open the Box app.
  2. Navigate to the folder where you’d like to add your files.
  3. If you’d like to create a new folder or add files to the root level of your account, stay on the All Files screen.
  4. Tap the “+” icon at the bottom of the screen.

Choose How You’d Like to Add Files

  • New Folder: Create a new folder at the root level of your account or within the folder you’re viewing.
  • New Document: Create a new Microsoft Office Document or text file.
  • New Box Note: Create a new Box Note.
  • New Media: Use your device’s camera to take a photo or video then upload it directly to Box.
  • Add from Library: Upload media (photo, video, documents) from your device’s media library as well as other local document storage apps.

Move or Copy a Single Item

  1. Navigate to the files/folders that you would like to move or copy.
  2. Tap the ellipses (…) to the right of the file name to open the More Options menu.
  3. Drag the menu up to reveal the full list of actions, then select Copy / Move.

  1. Select a destination, then tap either Copy Here, or Move Here to complete the appropriate action.
  2. Alternatively, you can perform these actions after previewing an item. Simply tap the ellipses in the top-right corner of the preview screen, and select Copy/Move.

  1. Navigate to the files/folders that you would like to move or copy.
  2. Select the items you’d like to move or copy by hovering over an item and pressing and holding (long-pressing), then tap the checkbox next to additional items to select them as well.
  3. Once you have selected the appropriate items, tap the Copy/Move icon in the top-right corner.

  1. Select a destination folder, then tap either Copy Here or Move Here to complete the appropriate action.

Deleting a Single Item in Box for Android

  1. Navigate to the files/folders that you would like to delete.
  2. Tap the ellipses (…) to the right of the file name to open the More Options menu.
  3. Drag the menu up to reveal the full list of actions, then tap Delete.

  1. Once you have selected the appropriate items, tap the ellipses () in the top-right corner. Then tap Delete.

Editing Files

You can open and edit files stored within Box with the appropriate applications installed on your mobile device, e.g. Microsoft Box for Office to edit a PowerPoint file.

To Edit Files:

      1. Tap the file to preview it in Box.
      2. Tap the Open with icon in the top bar.

The file will be opened in the default application installed on your device (the default application used to open a given file type can be modified in your device’s settings).

Accessing Recent Files

The Recent section gives you quick access to your recently-viewed files, and includes files recently accessed on other devices or browsers through your Box account.

The following files appear in this section:

  • Actively-previewed files
  • Files opened from a shared link
  • The last 100 files that you viewed

To access the Recent section:

  • Open the File menu by tapping the icon on the top-left corner
  • Tap Recent

Favorites

The Favorites section allows you to quickly access files/folders that you have marked as favorites. The Favorites section is helpful to store certain files that you need to access often.

To mark an item as a Favorite:

      1. Tap the ellipses to the right of the item’s name.
      2. Tap Add to Favorites

To access your Favorites:

      1. Open the File menu by tapping the icon in the top-left corner.
      2. Tap Favorites

Save Files to Your Android Device for Offline Access

You can save files and folders from Box to your Android device for access when your phone is not connected to a data or WiFi network.

You can access all files saved for offline access by tapping Offline in the file menu (left-hand side menu).

Make a Single File Available for Offline Use

      1. Locate the file or folder you’d like to save for offline access.
      2. Tap the ellipses (…) to open the More Options menu.
      3. Tap Make available offline. An icon will appear indicating that your file is now accessible offline.
      4. Alternatively, you can perform this action after previewing an item. Simply tap the ellipses in the top-right corner of the preview screen, and select Make available offline.

Make Multiple Files Available for Offline Use

      1. Locate the files or folders you’d like to save for offline access.
      2. Select the items you’d like to delete by long-pressing (press and hold) on a item, then tap the checkbox next to additional items to select them as well.
      3. Once you have selected the appropriate items, tap the ellipses (…) in the top-right corner.
      4. Tap Make available offline.

Exceptions

      1. If you do not have sufficient storage space on your device, you will not be able to save the content for offline use.
      2. Box Notes cannot be saved for offline use.

Box Notes for Android

      1. Box Notes can be created and edited in the Box for Android app.
      2. Box Notes are web-based documents and do not require any additional software.
      3. Use Box Notes to create, edit, and share ideas in real-time with your collaborators.

How to Create a Box Note

      1. Navigate to the folder where you’d like to create the new Box Note.
      2. Tap the + icon from the action menu at the bottom of the screen.
      3. Tap New Box Note.
      4. Name your Box Note, then tap Create. The note will open automatically.

Editing Box Notes

      1. Tap the Edit icon in the bottom-right to begin typing in your new Box Note.
      2. Use the toolbar at the top of the screen to format text. Apply changes to existing text by highlighting it before selecting a formatting option.

  1. Tap the Check Mark in the upper-left once you are done typing to dismiss the keyboard.
  2. You can leave comments on Box Notes by tapping the Comment icon in the upper-right corner.

Sharing Box Notes

      1. Tap the Share Link icon at the top of the screen, then tap the Share link enabled slider to generate a shared link to your Box Note.
      2. Only collaborators with access levels of Editor or Co-owner can make changes to Box Notes.
        • All other collaborators will only have view access.
        • You can choose to send the shared link directly to collaborators via the messaging app of your choice, or copy the link to the clipboard and paste it later.
